Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 After School Co-Curricular Program

Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 After School Co-Curricular Program

Our Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 students are in a unique stage of their development and require a co-curricular program that is specifically designed to meet their social, emotional and physical developmental needs.

Additionally, at this age and stage we want our youngest girls to be inspired to discover their strengths and passions by being able to experience the range of activities that MLC School has to offer. Our program coordinators and co-curricular staff are experts in their fields and have worked hard to develop these specialised programs to give our youngest students the best possible start to their journey at MLC School.

As a member of the Round Square global network of schools, and the only Round Square school in the Sydney Metropolitan Region, we are at the forefront of character and values education. Aligning with the School values of Courage, Compassion, Respect and Growth the Round Square Discovery Framework is a tool that assists us to operationalise these values and embed the framework’s character attributes into our programs. The discovery framework allows us to elevate our co-curricular programs beyond just skill development; it fosters in our girls a unique set of characteristics that enables them to reflect on their growth and their place in the world.

Through this program our Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 students will become acquainted with the Round Square Heroes of Discovery. The Heroes of Discovery are a set of 12 culturally diverse superheroes that will assist our co-curricular tutors in teaching our girls the importance of teamwork, being tenacious, compassionate, responsible and much more. This is what makes the MLC School approach to co-curricular a unique approach.

The Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 After School Co-Curricular Program will run from Monday to Thursday each week during the school term. The program will commence Week 2 of each term and conclude in the final week:

Speech and Drama Program

Director of The Speech and Drama Studio

Students will explore a range of speech and drama activities focused on strengthening their non-verbal and verbal communication skills. This will assist them in the creation and performance of their own version of the Round Square character attributes. Through differentiated poetry and prose pieces students will begin identifying characters in scripts, incorporating performance dynamics and engaging an audience. Students will work on cultivating and strengthening their communication and presentation skills through a variety of impromptu and public speaking tasks that relate to the Round Square Discovery Framework.

*Please note that only group classes are offered in the Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2 After School Co-Curricular Program. If you wish your daughter to also participate in an individualised program (private, duo and trios) these are available to MLC School students through The Speech and Drama Studio.

Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten Classes

Students will begin their foray into the world of speech and drama though a range of role play, speaking and movement-based exercises. We focus on building their confidence and developing their communication skills in the presentation of their understanding of the Round Square Heroes of Discoveries.

Year 1 and Year 2 Classes

Students will continue to develop their communication skills through improvisation and character-building activities. Text pieces such as poetry and prose allow our young performers to harness their storytelling abilities and work on engaging their audiences. By reflecting on the Round Square character attributes students will continue to practice their public speaking and discussion skills.

Physio Play is a small group functional movement program that is designed by physiotherapists and delivered by at least two instructors. They assist children to develop the necessary strength, control, cognitive skill and coordination to achieve age appropriate developmental milestones which prepare them for future life. The program is designed for students between 10 months and 10 years old and is delivered by coaches in preschools, childcare centres and schools. Each week the students will work on skills developing:

  • Strength and control– core, pelvic and shoulder control supports postural stability enabling accurate completion of fine motor skills and improved focus on cognitive tasks. Development of postural strength and endurance also promotes gross motor skill acquisition.
  • Processing and sequencing –from motor planning and processing to auditory and visual sequencing. The ability to interpret, sequence and carry out instructions and actions enables more holistic involvement in sport, the classroom and everyday life
  • Integration and dominance –using left and right sides of the body and ‘midline crossing’ helps to integrate the brain, improving coordination of movement. It supports efficiency of motor patterns and development of a dominant side. All foundational in literacy and numeracy skills.

Dance (Pre-Kindergarten to Year 2)

The Pre-K to Year 2 Dance classes incorporate a variety of dance techniques and genres aimed to introduce our youngest students to a range of styles offered at MLC School and ignite their passion for dance. Students discover basic concepts of movement through a thematic approach, while engaging with the Round Square Heroes of Discovery to incorporate our unique character and values based educational approach to our co-curricular programming

This multi-dimensional approach to dance allows our students to develop their social skills and inspire creativity. The 45-minute sessions focus on the development of gross motor skills – stepping, jumping, hoppingbalancing and galloping – to improve spatial awareness, musicality and express. These sessions develop each student’s fundamental dance techniques while introducing them to dance as an artform, preparing the girls to enter style specific dance disciplines in the Year 3 to Year 6 Program.

Ballet (Kindergarten to Year 2)

Classical Ballet is a traditional form of dance that requires discipline and strength to enhance body alignment. Sound ballet technique allows dancers to transition amongst other forms of dance with ease with a strong focus of kinaesthetic and body awareness. Ballet trains the body carefully to develop control, coordination and quality of line.

Our ballet classes include traditional barré and centre work, alongside the inclusion of tactile props and stimuli to help students navigate the fine art of classical movement. This class is run as an extension to the Dance class with some crossover to the foundations of Rhythmic Gymnastics, making this an excellent companion program.
